Hobo Nickelとは背面のレリーフになっているバッファローから"Buffalo Nickel"と呼ばれる、1913年から30年代後期まで流通した5セントなどを削って作られたものが"Hobo Nickel"。ニッケルの加工しやすさと、レリーフとなっている大きなインディアンヘッドの様々な形へと変えられる流用性の高さも人気となり、1980年代までには彫刻家らによって一つのアートシーンにも発展したようです。
